Bali was just named the world's #1 destination for 2026, and more foreigners than ever are turning a holiday into a life here. But "moving to Bali" means something completely different in buzzy Canggu versus calm Sanur. This is our honest, area-by-area guide to where expats actually live in 2026 — what each place feels like, who it suits, and roughly what it costs.

Canggu — the digital-nomad capital

If you want to meet people in your first week, Canggu is it: coworking spaces, laptop cafes, surf, gyms and a relentless social scene. The trade-off is traffic and the highest prices on the island. Best for younger nomads, entrepreneurs and anyone who wants energy over quiet.

Pererenan — Canggu's calmer, fast-rising neighbour

Just north of Canggu, Pererenan offers the same cafes and beach but with rice fields, more space and a more grown-up feel. It is one of the fastest-appreciating zones in Bali — see our Pererenan vs Canggu breakdown and why the smart money is moving here.

Seminyak — stylish and established

Boutiques, beach clubs and Bali's best restaurants. Seminyak is polished, walkable and convenient, but among the priciest areas. Best for those who want comfort and nightlife without roughing it.

Ubud — nature, wellness and calm

Inland among rice terraces and jungle, Ubud is the heart of Bali's wellness and yoga scene. Quieter, greener and more affordable than the south, with a booming retreat market. Best for creatives, families and anyone seeking long-term balance.

Sanur — family-friendly and stable

Calm, safe and well-served by schools and healthcare, Sanur is the choice for families and retirees. A gentle beach town with a settled, long-term community and some of the better value in south Bali.

Uluwatu & the Bukit — ocean views and surf

Clifftops, world-class waves and a slower, nature-focused pace. Uluwatu is mid-range on cost and increasingly popular for long-term living among couples and surfers — and it is one of Bali's strongest investment zones (here's why).
