Canggu's traffic is the stuff of legend — the one complaint every visitor, resident and investor shares. Now the Badung government is finally putting real money behind fixing it. From a new Canggu–Batu Bolong shortcut to a Rp 5 trillion road program, here is what is coming, when, and why it matters for property.
Canggu's Traffic Nightmare
Canggu grew faster than its roads ever could. A handful of narrow, equally-trafficked lanes feed a district that now rivals Seminyak for restaurants, beach clubs and nomads — and the result is gridlock that can turn a 10-minute hop into an hour. It is the single biggest friction point in Bali's most in-demand area, and fixing it has become a government priority.
The Batu Bolong Shortcut & New Access Roads
The Badung Regency Government is finalising plans for a new shortcut connecting Canggu and Batu Bolong to reduce congestion caused by the area's rapid tourism growth. Badung Regent I Wayan Adi Arnawa called the new access road one of the key solutions to improve mobility and comfort for residents and visitors, adding that the government is "preparing concrete solutions, including the opening of new road access and the development of integrated infrastructure" — while committing to protect Canggu's cultural heritage in the process.
The Bigger Picture: Rp 5 Trillion
The shortcut is one piece of a much larger plan. The West Gatsu–Canggu road — an extension of Gatot Subroto Barat — has been added to the Badung Regency Spatial Plan, with land acquisition targeted for 2026 and construction hoped for 2027. It is expected to relieve congestion not just in Canggu but east toward Kuta, Legian and Seminyak, and west toward Tanah Lot. On top of that, the Bali provincial government is prioritising roughly Rp 5 trillion (~$300M+) of new roads and underpasses across Badung and Denpasar from 2026, including links from Sunset Road and Gatot Subroto Barat toward Canggu.
The investor's rule: infrastructure precedes appreciation. In Bali, areas that get new access roads have repeatedly seen land and villa values climb once connectivity improves. The window to position is before the roads open — not after the prices have already caught up.
What It Means for Property
Better roads do three things for Canggu values. They cut journey times, making the whole district — and its quieter edges in Batu Bolong, Berawa and neighbouring Pererenan — more liveable and more rentable. They unlock pockets of land that were previously cut off by traffic. And they reinforce Canggu's status as Bali's number-one lifestyle hub. The same infrastructure-led story is playing out across the island — from the new Uluwatu ring road to the North Bali airport — which is why the smart money is already moving on Bali's emerging zones.
